Primate’s Message for Easter 2022
Alleluia! Christ is Risen!
He is Risen, indeed! Alleluia!
One can only imagine the joy, the peace, the reassurance, the Apostles experienced when, from behind closed doors, the Risen Lord appeared; witnessing to them, and through them to the world, the reality of His resurrection and the promise of life everlasting. Death had given way to life; the grief of the grave to the joy of the empty tomb; sorrow and separation disappeared in the moment of recognition: “We have seen the Lord! He is risen! Alleluia!”
The faith of the first Christian community was born out of their direct experience of the reality of Jesus’ resurrection. From that very real experience, the Church has told and retold the story of Christ’s triumph over the powers of sin and death – not just to recall a unique event in the life of the world but to give continual witness to the power of the Risen Lord in the life of every Christian, indeed in the life of the world.
Over the past two years our world has struggled with the challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic, with all its variants and mutations. This Easter, the world faces yet another challenge – the struggle with the evil of war; a war of imperialistic aggression waged against an innocent people by a ruthless maniacal autocrat. A struggle seen so many times before in our history: a battle between good and evil; a battle between truth and lies; a battle between freedom and tyranny. Into this reality, the Christian Church is called to witness the love of God in the face of the Cross, and the triumph of Christ’s Resurrection.
It is precisely in these times in which we live that the strength of our faith in Christ crucified and risen holds the most meaning. The Apostles had placed all their hopes on Jesus that He was indeed the Messiah, the Saviour of the world. Those hopes seemed dashed in the darkness of Calvary. The Passion, Death and Burial of Jesus, their Lord and Master, fractured their faith. But death did not have the final word; evil had not triumphed; the tomb could not hold Jesus. Sin, violence, hatred, and death were overcome by the power of God’s redeeming love.
During the fifty days of Easter, and in the days beyond, we will celebrate as people of faith. Faith in God, faith in His saving grace, faith that righteousness will prevail even in the face of evil. And in the conditions of our present world, with war and violence, pandemic, economic uncertainty, the shattering of so many innocent lives, it is all the more important that we live our Christian lives with faith, hope, and love. Witnessing to our faith in acts of charity, in acts of compassion, with messages of peace, and in the firm belief that “neither tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or peril, or sword; nor death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 8:35,38-39)
As we rejoice in the blessings of Easter, we know our journey of faith is not yet complete. We have more trials, challenges, difficulties, and struggles to encounter and overcome; but we do so in the knowledge that we are not alone. The Cross stands before us; the Risen Christ ever with us. As the Apostles went forth from that upper room to witness to the world the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ, let us also go forth in the love and strength of God.
May all of us be blessed this Easter Season with new life, new hope, and a sure and lively faith. Holding to the promises of Jesus: “These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

¡Aleluya! ¡Cristo ha resucitado!
¡Él es resucitado, de hecho! ¡Aleluya!
Uno solo puede imaginarse la alegría, la paz, la tranquilidad que sintieron los Apóstoles cuando, a puertas cerradas, apareció el Señor Resucitado; testificándoles, y por medio de ellos al mundo, la realidad de su resurrección y la promesa de la vida eterna. La muerte había dado paso a la vida; el dolor de la tumba a la alegría de la tumba vacía; el dolor y la separación desaparecieron en el momento del reconocimiento: “¡Hemos visto al Señor! ¡Él ha resucitado! ¡Aleluya!”
La fe de la primera comunidad cristiana nació de su experiencia directa de la realidad de la resurrección de Jesús. A partir de esa experiencia muy real, la Iglesia ha contado una y otra vez la historia del triunfo de Cristo sobre los poderes del pecado y de la muerte, no solo para recordar un evento único en la vida del mundo, sino para dar un testimonio continuo del poder del Señor Resucitado en la vida de todo cristiano, más aún, en la vida del mundo.
Durante los últimos dos años, nuestro mundo ha luchado con el desafío de la pandemia de Covid-19, con todas sus variantes y mutaciones. Esta Pascua, el mundo se enfrenta a otro desafío: la lucha contra el mal de la guerra; una guerra de agresión imperialista librada contra un pueblo inocente por un autócrata despiadado y maníaco. Una lucha vista tantas veces antes en nuestra historia: una batalla entre el bien y el mal; una batalla entre la verdad y la mentira; una batalla entre la libertad y la tiranía. En esta realidad, la Iglesia cristiana está llamada a testimoniar el amor de Dios ante la Cruz, y el triunfo de la Resurrección de Cristo.
Precisamente en estos tiempos que vivimos, cobra mayor sentido la fuerza de nuestra fe en Cristo crucificado y resucitado. Los Apóstoles habían puesto todas sus esperanzas en Jesús de que Él era de hecho el Mesías, el Salvador del mundo. Esas esperanzas parecían acabadas en la oscuridad del Calvario. La Pasión, Muerte y Sepultura de Jesús, su Señor y Maestro, fracturó su fe. Pero la muerte no tuvo la última palabra; el mal no había triunfado; la tumba no pudo contener a Jesús. El pecado, la violencia, el odio y la muerte fueron vencidos por el poder del amor redentor de Dios.
Durante los cincuenta días de Pascua, y en los días posteriores, celebraremos como personas de fe. Fe en Dios, fe en Su gracia salvadora, fe en que la justicia prevalecerá incluso frente al mal. Y en las condiciones de nuestro mundo actual, con la guerra y la violencia, la pandemia, la incertidumbre económica, la destrucción de tantas vidas inocentes, es aún más importante que vivamos nuestra vida cristiana con fe, esperanza y amor. Que demos testimonio de nuestra fe en actos de caridad, en actos de compasión, con mensajes de paz, y en la firme creencia de que “ni tribulación, ni angustia, ni persecución, ni peligro, ni espada; ni la muerte, ni la vida, ni ángeles, ni principados, ni potestades, ni lo presente, ni lo por venir, ni lo alto, ni lo profundo, ni ninguna otra cosa creada nos podrá separar del amor de Dios, que está en Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor.” (Romanos 8:35, 38-39)
Mientras nos regocijamos en las bendiciones de la Pascua, sabemos que nuestro viaje de fe aún no está completo. Tenemos más pruebas, desafíos, dificultades y luchas que enfrentar y superar; pero lo hacemos sabiendo que no estamos solos. La Cruz está ante nosotros; el Cristo Resucitado siempre con nosotros. Así como los Apóstoles salieron de ese aposento alto para dar testimonio al mundo del Evangelio salvador de Jesucristo, avancemos nosotros también en el amor y la fuerza de Dios.
Que todos seamos bendecidos en este Tiempo Pascual con nueva vida, nueva esperanza y una fe segura y animada. Nos aferramos a las promesas de Jesús: “Estas cosas os he hablado para que en mí tengáis paz. En el mundo usted tendrá tribulación; pero tened buen ánimo, yo he vencido al mundo.” (Juan 16:33)
